Book Review: Lovelight Farms by B. K. Borison
Published: November 10th 2021 by Berkley/Macmillan
Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Genre: Adult // Contemporary Romance, Festive
Quick Thoughts: It made every part of my heart light up like a Christmas tree. I was right there with the characters as sparks flew, hot chocolate was sipped and magic was made.
About The Book:
Two best friends fake date to reach their holiday happily ever after in this first romantic comedy in the Lovelight series.
A pasture of dead trees. A hostile takeover of the Santa barn by a family of raccoons. And shipments that have mysteriously gone missing. Lovelight Farms is not the magical winter wonderland of Stella Bloom’s dreams.
In an effort to save the Christmas tree farm she’s loved since she was a kid, Stella enters a contest with Instagram-famous influencer Evelyn St. James. With the added publicity and the $100,000 cash prize, Stella might just be able to save the farm from its financial woes. There’s just one problem. To make the farm seem like a romantic destination for the holidays, she lied on her application and said she owns Lovelight Farms with her boyfriend. Only…there is no boyfriend.
Enter best friend Luka Peters. He just stopped by for some hot chocolate and somehow got a farm and a serious girlfriend in the process. But fake dating his best friend might be the best Christmas present he’s ever received.
First Thoughts
I’m ashamed to admit that it took me this long to purchase Lovelight Farms when so many of my bookish friends have raved about it for years. After seeing an instagram post with the latest and last book in the series coming out next year, I thought it was about time I started the series. And with the festive season approaching, it was kismet.
My Review
Stella has wanted to create the perfect Christmas experience at Lovelight Farms for as long as she can remember. She wants to make it just like her childhood dream, from a magical light show to skating rink, Santa’s sleigh and Christmas tree farm for all to explore. But disaster has been happening at every corner of the winter wonderland she’s set out to make. With the help of her employees Beckett and Layla—and the support of her best friend in the entire universe, Luka—Stella knows they need a miracle. So when she enters an exciting contest with Instagram-famous influencer Evelyn St. James with an added massive cash prize and publicity, it’s just the thing they need.
But there’s just one issue: to make the farm seem like a romantic and family-friendly wonderland, Stella lies on the application and says she owns it with her boyfriend, who does not exist. Enter best friend Luka, who gets roped up into the façade as Stella’s fake boyfriend. But it’s not exactly a task for either of them. Sparks have been firing away for years, and the more they pretend to be in love, with the whole town seemingly rooting for their love story, the more it becomes clear that there’s something very real in the fantasy they’ve created. From kitchen dancing to sofa cuddles and hazelnut lattes, Stella and Luka get lost in a world of what ifs, with a long thought question hanging over their heads: are they supposed to be each other’s forevers as more than just best friends?
Overall, Lovelight Farms made every part of my heart light up like a Christmas tree. I was right there with the characters as sparks flew, hot chocolate was sipped and magic was made. B. K. Borison has this way of writing cosily, and I fell into the story with an angelic ease, turning pages and swooning into the night. Friends-to-Lovers is my all time favourite trope, and B. K. does this with an effortless perfection that makes me want to read Lovelight Farms all over again. Bursting with all the feel-good-feels of romance with the charm of festive warmth, this is an easy contender for my favourite book of the year. Without a doubt a five star book.
