About This Book:
Layla Dupree has given up on love.
She’s waded through all of the fish in the sea, each one more disappointing than the last. Apparently owning the bakery at Inglewild’s most romantic destination does not help one’s love life—despite her best efforts. All she wants is a partner who gives her butterflies, not someone who ghosts her at dinner and leaves her with the check.
Good thing Caleb Alvarez has the perfect solution.
After saving Layla from another date gone bad, he has a simple proposition: One month of no-strings dating. He’ll do his best to renew her faith in men while she rates his dating game. It’s a win-win situation. All the benefits of dating, without the added pressure of feelings and unmet expectations.
But there’s one ingredient they haven’t considered. The chemistry between them is red hot and the urge to take things to the next level is more tempting than Layla’s double fudge mocha brownies.
Will the heat between them boil over? Or will it be another case of mixed signals?
Mixed Signals is a sweet and steamy small-town romance. Our story features a bashful man who can rock a Hawaiian shirt, a hopeful and dreamy bakery owner, enough sweets to give you a cavity, and your favorite Inglewild residents. Mixed Signals is a standalone romance and the third book in the Lovelight series, a collection of interconnected novels.
First Thoughts
The Lovelight Farms series is not only beloved in the bookish community, but here on my blog. Ever since I read Lovelight Farms back in 2023 (I was majorly late to the party) followed by In The Weeds shortly after, I didn’t find myself having a gap in my TBR until recently to start Mixed Signals. Like Layla, I am a fan of baking all the sweet things in the world, so I knew I’d find myself a kindred spirit from the get-go.
My Review
Layla Dupree doesn’t know why she’s had zero luck in love. She runs the most romantically idyllic bakery in Inglewild, the prettiest bakehouse that ever was. Still, date after date is a disaster, and her hopes and dreams of a love like a movie are fading by the day. On another torturous date where he might be stealing the restaurant’s cutlery, she runs into Caleb Alvarez, resident kind hearted, golden retriever. After he saves her from an expensive taxi ride home, they strike up an unlikely proposition with one another to remedy their equal disbelief in conjuring a great love life: a month of no-strings dating. They can give each other notes, Caleb can show Layla how she should be treated, and in return give Caleb some tips on date planning.
What Layla doesn’t expect from her show-stealing dates with Caleb is just how fiercely he shows her the right way to be treated, a stark difference between her previous relationships, from rollerskating to picnics and loving looks across the bakehouse counter. But Caleb has been harbouring a crush on Layla for some time, long before their agreement, and his family agree that he’s playing a dangerous game, everything she possesses taking over his heart. And as their clear-cut agreement becomes hazy in the introduction of steamy kisses and crossing into more benefits than friends territory, Layla is scared she’s going to mess up a good thing because she’s never had one to lose, their agreement end looming. But Caleb is determined to make good on his promises and her heart, and with the magic of Lovelight Farms a constant sparkle in the air, he puts a plan into motion to let her know just how wonderful she is—and that he’ll be there until she believes in it, too.
Overall, Mixed Signals was toasty, sweet and a slice of pure, late-summer heaven. I think that Layla might be my favourite Lovelight character yet. The romance that B. K. Borison spun for Caleb and Layla was a cut above the rest, swoon-worthy and delightful in every way possible. I felt my heart falling further in love with Lovelight Farms over and over, page after page, the characters spurring a homey kind of warmth that cannot be replicated. I adored the kinship bond of the Alvarez family, how they always showed up for each other, similarly to Stella, Beckett, and Layla (with Luka, Evelyn and now Caleb in the mix) creating their own family in Lovelight. There is something magical about the Lovelight Farms series that I cannot put into words. It has my heart, and so do Layla and Caleb and their happy ever after. I can’t wait to read Charlie and Nova’s book!
